Rik Raats playing guitar horseback on Colonel Summer

Colonel Summer's Musical Act

>>> In preparation for a special show, I took Colonel Summer and introduced him to the guitar. After a brief introduction to the guitar I started using an electric guitar with a transmitter to a receiver sending the signal to the guitar amp miked for the sound system. Of course, previously I learned him to be ridden with little rein cues (like in roping), and in a later stage with no rein cues at all. Only my legs and my balance as riding cues.

The first melodies and chords were produced in walk, jog, and when self assured enough to take the right lead, we got into loping. Collection and balance are fundamentally important to result into movements that allow me to concentrate on guitar playing. We work at a solo with both fast notes and long sustain tones. This requires an ease of mind for both the horse and rider. He works great. I'm so proud of him.

Left : Notice the horse's ears getting used to the sound of live music.
